Protect Marriage, Protect Children, Prohibit Divorce
View the video here
Sign the petition here
Quote:
Target:Californians
Sponsored by: No On Prop 8
A Petition for a California State Proposition that Prohibits Divorce Between Heterosexual Married Couples
Divorce destroys the sanctity of marriage and its powerful influence on the betterment of society. This proposition would keep the very meaning of marriage from being transformed into nothing more than a contractual relationship between two adults. Prohibiting divorce between heterosexual married couples will keep the interests of children and families intact. We will continue to celebrate marriage as the union of husband and wife, not as a relationship between "Party A" and "Party B." The marriage of a man and a woman has been at the heart of society since the beginning of time and it promotes the ideal opportunity for children to be raised by a mother and a father in a family held together by the legal, communal, and spiritual bonds of marriage. As a society we should put the best interests of children first, and those interests lie in traditional marriage. Permitting divorce destroys marriage as we know it and causes a profound harm to society. We should be restoring marriage, not undermining it.
And for those of you who voted yes on Prop 8 but disagree with this petition...Why? This petition is copied and pasted from literature from your website, ProtectMarriage.com, but applied to Divorce instead of Gay Marriage. So how can you argue with your own words?
|
Please support the banning of divorce, and sign the petition, just like all the people that voted yes on Prop 8 for the reason of protecting marriage.

I dont live in the USA either, but was still supporting No on Prop 8.
Since it passed, I now support divorce to be banned as well out of epic win sarcasm.

True, but as I already mentioned, this is a sarcastic move made by supporters of no on Prop 8 using all the same arguments that supporters of the proposition used to get it passed.
Click on the links if you havnt already, and watch the video. It will fill you in on the joke that this is, but it would be an epic win for humanity if it ever passed, just to highlight the flaws in human logic, like that which was applied to Prop 8.

Parents divorced, did not find it too traumatizing. I have no real opinion here.

Oh god.. that would be a disaster. I'm married, and I have gone into marriage with the thoughts that divorce is not an option... but this is surely not for everyone.
What about serial cheaters? What about physical or emotional abuse, or even just plain out realising that you're gay. (We've all heard the stories, it happens)
Black and white laws are not fair, and making divorce illegal is certainly not going to protect children.
Fail petition is fail. And shame on Americans for taking away Gay marriage as well!
So I just realised this is sarcasm.. blame my lack of coffee. >< Anyway, my comments still stand.

I could just create a hundred fake accounts and sign for that crap.
And then see how even my fellow countrymen that live in California would return.

Yea people are missing the point a lot. Gay couples in California and many other states in America are now far worse of then heterosexual couples that enter marriages purely for social benefits.
Prop 8 passed for all the same reasons that this prohibition on divorce is using, they are just changing the words 'Gay marriage' to 'Divorce'.
You know - 'Marriage is sacred and holy, homosexuality angers God and is sinful, so it should be banned' -
- Now try changing the word 'homosexuality' in the above statement to 'divorce'. That is the point of this proposition, if that helps to make it any clearer.

Can we force people to get married aswell? Maybe we could pair people up in terms of height, eye colour or taste in curtains?
We could force them to love each other! Simple drug therapy would dose them up so bad they wouldnt know who to jump in bed with, if you make sure they never see anyone but their oh so loving spouse then noone gets hurt! Win win!

I would urge people not to sign this. People fall out of love. People have a choice whether to be together and make it work or call it quits. I imagine resentment would increase if couples were forced to stay married. Its just dumb. In fact it's the dumbest thing i've read on this forum. Sorry if i'm being rude to the op, but that post is the first time i've got emotionally angry at a thread on this forum.

Living in a backward religious Asian family in the UK myself, this is actually a serious matter.
They, as devout Hindus, believe in forced arranged marriages, and that Divorce is wrong and sinful, I.E. your parents should choose you a 'good' partner to marry, and you should be under oath to remain married to that person to the rest of your life.
One of my older female cousins was beaten by her parents for refusing their arranged marriage by saying 'This is not the man for me'. They wanted her to marry someone with a good education and highly paid job just for the financial gain of having that person in the family, but she pretty much hated the guy who would have just wanted her as a cooking and cleaning houswife anyway.
These kind of arranged marriages are still common in the UK among the backward asian cultures - It is even believed that a lot of British Asians are even more backward then people in their home country (I can definately say I agree with this).
The religions at fault here are both Hinduism and Islam, and people that follow them in an extremely backward way. Christians in America also seem to be going backwards now, and declining into a similar state that these devout Hindus / Muslims from Asia / Africa are nowadays.

^ further to the above post. There are instances of young women running away from home to avoid arranged marriages that are being held against their will. The issue of people being forced to marry is a different matter from forcing people to stay together. Regardless they are both a principle of choice. You can't ask people to sign a petition to abolish the right to having a divorce and at the same time raise the problems or arranged marriages. My sarcasm detector may be broke but i'm confused as to what your trying to say.

The petition = Sarcasm, not serious.
They copy pasted all the logic and arguments from 'Yes on Prop 8', and changed the words 'Gay Marriage' to 'Divorce'.

Ah, I am at work and thus unable to look at the video/petition. Otherwise it looks like we were both singing from the same hymn sheet.

If this petition is Sarcasm, why are you wanting people to sign it? Especially if you're against this kind of idea.
Does Not Compute.
I do very much hope people don't make divorce illegal. Although it would be funny to see all the fake marriages ruined due to being unable to divorce, however, this would raise the (celebrity) homicide rate, as the desperate ones would kill to get out.
And an argument against banning gay marriage - Church and State are separate.
Also - Your God is not my God.
Lastly - The Bible does not explicitly state Homosexuality is evil.
(I hate religiously devout people, always missing the logic of things and going with their fallible ideals as "God's work/wish/desire/intention/whatever")
My mini rant is over. Could go on.

This petition is terrible. Go for a ban on the legal recognition of remarriage after divorce, not the divorce itself. That strategy would increase overall support, and provide a direct, undeniable Biblical backing.
(Matthew 19:9)
(Mark 10:11-12)
(Luke 16:18)
(Romans 7:2-3)
(1 Corinthians 7:10-11)
So has the Lord, our God spoken. Deny not His word. Any man or woman who doth bed another husband or wife commits adultery, a grievous sin of sexual immorality. Let our Christian nation no longer tolerate this abject defiance of His word.
See what I mean? Much more conviction.
(Note: No, I didn't miss the point of the petition. My point is that you can't just copy words to make the point - you have to capture the intensity and realism, or people will ignore you.)

marriage is holy??? Does that mean that atheists are entering into a religious contract???
There are lots of married americans who dont believe in a god (unless you count money as one).....they would be very amused to find out they are in a 'holy' union!!
funny very very funny
